A yeast infection is most common in women, but men can also get a yeast infection.  Men may have very few symptoms such as itching. 

Yeast is normal in human beings, but too much yeast can cause irritations such as itching, swelling, redness and discharge in the vaginal area.

If you think that you have a yeast infection, see your doctor, or check your symptoms online.  A yeast infection can be treated without a prescription.

1. Over the counter medications such as fluconazole. Fluconazole is found in over the counter medications such as Monistat. Read the package directions and your itcy, swelling, cottage cheese like discharge and redness will be cleared up in a few days.

2. Plain yogurt can be used to treat a yeast infection. If you have had a yeast infection before or your recognize the symptoms, you may be able to treat it yourself at home. If it does not go away in a few days, see a doctor. Apply plain yogurt as often as needed.

3. Diflucan is an oral prescription that can clear up a uncomfortable yeast infection quickly. You will need to get a prescription from your doctor.

4. Candida albicans (a yeast infection) can be treated with an anti-fungal suppository.

5. Clotrimazole can also be used to clear up a yeast infection.

6. Nystatin can also be used to treat a yeast infection and is available over the counter without a prescription.

7. Anti-fungal douches are effective at relieving a yeast infection and they also provide a relief for symptoms such as itching.

8. Gentian violet can be used to treat a yeast infection such as oral thrush, but only in small amounts. Large amounts can be dangerous, especially to breast feeding mothers. It is not recommended.

9. You can wait to see if it will clear up on its own if you have a very mild case.

10. Wear only cotton underwear and loose fitting clothing until your yeast infection clears up.
